07 – Uchumi-Alcohuaz Pre-Columbian Trail Crossing

Categories: ,

Description

Follow an ancestral mountain trail created by the transhumant indigenous peoples, to travel with their cattle from the mountains to the sea between the high peaks.
We leave early in the morning by vehicle, winding through the mountains for approximately 30 minutes until we reach the end of the road. Before that, we visit the Uchumi Petroglyph, one of the most iconic in the commune of Vicuña, where you can see vestiges of the indigenous peoples who created this route and their Andean worldview. We begin our trek at dawn, which consists of a long walk with a gentle but sustained ascent, always along a narrow box of purple and red colors, dotted with cacti and medicinal herbs and with natural water sprouts every so often. After approximately 7 hours of trekking, we arrive at a “Majada” where we will spend the night under the stars in the old style of the ancient inhabitants who traveled this path.
At dawn we enjoy an exquisite country breakfast, then continue the journey and reach Portezuelo, located at 3,000 meters above sea level (the highest point of the route). From there we enjoy one of the most privileged views of both valleys (Uchumi and Estero Derecho). Then we begin the long and beautiful descent (approximately 8 hours) towards the charming town of Alcohuaz. Where we return by vehicle to your accommodation (simple version). Or, if you wish, an exquisite dinner, accommodation, hydromassage pool, hot tub and/or wood-burning sauna under the stars can await you (full version).
